Motorsport Career:

Started motorsport at the age of 9 in Karting in the "Cadet Series".

Progressed to Junior Britain class at 12 the Senior Britain at 16.

Competed in British championships in 1997 but it was very expensive!!

Offered drives in both Formula Vauxhall following scholarship drive,and Renault Clios but no budget available so had to decline.

Transferred to Saloon car racing in 1998 in the Mighty Mini series.Finishing 10th in championships in first year .

Took enforced rest last season due to major theft of equipment and vehicles.

Re-entered series this season. Hopes to transfer to Mini Se7en or Ford Fiesta series.

Blames Dad (Tony) for motorsport interest !!!

Family: Yes – Married with two motorsport mad young lads


Motorsport interests: Stage rallying as a navigator and organiser. Have competed in nearly 100 events with a range of drivers including competing in Belgium, the Welsh National Championship and many other events. Currently navigate for club member Tim Stell, competing on a select number of tarmacadam stage rallies including the annual pilgrimage to the Tour of Mull, and occasionally for club member Matt Tarbutt. I have held most of the main positions within the organising team for the Opposite Lock Rally (not at the same time!) so have a good grasp of most things when it comes to multi-use rallies. I also run the Association of Northern Car Clubs Stage Rally Championship – see www.ancc.co.uk

Present car: Honda Accord Tourer (ooooh, so very sporty!!)


Motorsport Ambition: To win a stage rally outright. To do more events and pay less (or nothing!) for doing them. To beat our 10th pace on the 2007 Tour of Mull. To have some more goes at driving.

Successes: Best road rally result – 3rd Overall (Chantry Rally with Joff Haigh- 3rd ever road rally). Best overall stage rally results – 3rd overall (Bomb-along Stages, Oakington) and 10th overall 2007 Tour of Mull, both with Timo Stell. 1st Overall ANEMMC Championship, 2nd Overall ANCC Championship, 1st in Class Welsh National Championship

Comments: Finished only event contested as a driver on the Opposite Lock Rally in 2005. Would love to do more but finances prevent it at the moment!

PROFILE

Name: Martin Shaw

Age: 50 something

Occupation: Self-employed marketing consultant. University lecturer.

Family: Wife, Eira.

Motorsports Career: Started rallying in 1988 in Ladas. Won the Lada Challenge in 1995, ‘96, ‘97, ‘98 and 2001.

Competed on the RAC Rally in 1994, ‘95, ‘96. Finished 80th in 1994 (equal to the second with Innes and Alison Marlow in their 4WD Cosworth, and 33 minutes ahead of Penny Mallory in a similar Lada Riva. I don’t think she’s ever forgiven me! Crashed out in 1995 while leading Class A5 and beating the works Skoda. Got excluded along with the other 42 club drivers in the snow and ice in 1996.

Currently competing in the BTRDA Formula 1400 championship. Won Class B9 in BTRDA in 2002. Wrote the trusty Lada off (see photo) on Wyedean in 2003. Now runs a 1400cc Escort in the Silkolene 1400 British Championship.

Motorsports ambition: Beat the Citroen C2s in the BTDA Formula 1400 championship.

 Patrick Watts 

Patrick Watts is a Racing & Rally driver who competed successfully in the BTCC for many years, then in the Australian touring cars. He has now found the Historic Rally Championship to his liking and drives a Sunbeam Tiger.

 

Other information.

Patrick runs his own successful business, his company designs and manufacturers tailor made storage equipment.

He has also found time to support the charity Motorbility, making personal appearances to help raise funds.

Patrick started in club saloon racing and progressed to the most popular and competitive saloon car championship – 2.0 litres British Touring Cars.

He has inspired and encouraged lots of young would be touring car drivers, including sponsoring a driver and offer advise and experience.

 

Career history.

 

  • 1979 – National Mini 850 Champion

 

  • 1980 – 1275 GT Mini runner up

 

  • 1981 & 1982 – Metro Challenge runner up

 

  • 1983 - Works driver, BTCC Metro Turbo

 

  • 1984  -Works driver, BTCC Metro Turbo, Patrick was leading the championship when Austin Rover withdrew mid-season

 

  • 1985 – Essex Motorsport Escort RS1600 in BTCC

 

  • 1986 – UNO Turbo National saloon car championship. Patrick demonstrated particular skill in the wet, winning races that he attributes to his natural ability in car control.

 

  • 1988 – Honda CRX Champion

 

  • 1989 – Works Honda driver, Patrick helped Honda’s development programme for “Tour of Britain.”

 

  • 1990 – Honda CRS Champion & Mazda MX5 Champion

 

  • 1991 – Esso saloon car champion. Patrick won the championship driving a works Group N Peugeot 309 GTI. This was Peugeots first experience of Patrick. His performance and attitude impressed the factory team, which was pleased to welcome him back to take Peugeots number one seat in the BTCC in 1994.

 

  • 1992 – Works driver – Mazda BTCC – Patrick spent time developing the 323F and Xedos 6 models.

 

  • 1993 – Works driver – Mazda – BTCC, during the season Patrick too pole position at Snetterton and was on the front row for the Knockhill race. His results also include two fourths and the lap record for the support race at the British Grand Prix.

 

  • 1994 – Patrick took up his position as number One driver in the works Peugeot BTCC team, driving a 405 Ml16. Patrick  finished eighth in the championship, taking the third spot on the podium at Silverstone, Oulton park and two successive races at Brands Hatch.

 

  • 1997 – Patrick to lead Peugeot offensive during the BTCC partnered by Simon Harrison

 

  • 1998 Australian touring cars, Patrick led then championship after 4 rounds then came home happy.

 

  • 2004 The last race was the masters at Donnington were he went from 2nd to last thanks to Jason Plato and back to 4th then off again thanks to Jason Plato.  

 

  • 2004 > Present, Patrick Rallies a Sunbeam Tiger in the Historic Championship and has easily made the transition from tarmac to gravel and having a passenger, he is currently building a new Tiger amongst his many other car projects.
